Neither financial prudence nor concern for the commonweal explains the American position, according to Reid, whose findings divulge that the U.S. not only spends more money on health care than any other nation but also leaves 45 million residents uninsured, allowing about 22,000 to die from easily treatable diseases. Seeking treatment for the flareup of an old shoulder injury, he visits doctors in the U.S., France, Germany, Japan and England—with a stint in an Ayurvedic clinic in India—in a quest for treatment that dovetails with his search for a cure for America's health-care crisis, a narrative device that sometimes feels contrived, but allows him valuable firsthand experience. For all the scope of his research and his ability to mint neat rebuttals to the common American misconception that universal health care is socialized medicine, Reid neglects to address the elephant in the room: just how are we to sell these changes to the mighty providers and insurers?

I bought this book after reading Jacob Weisberg's review in Newsweek. It is the best thing on the subject for the following reasons: 1. It is well written even funny in places. 2. It is very informative. 3. It presents comparative data both as to health outcomes and also ways of paying for health care 4. It is non-partisan, even though by the end one wonders why we Americans are paying so much for health outcomes that are actually worse than any comparable country. 5. It is revealing as to the complexity of the US; for example, I didn't know that as many as 80 million Americans are already covered by systems nearly identical to the British or Canadian, i.e. medicaid, medicare, military, veterans and Department of Indian Affairs - who would have thought that? But 45 million others are not covered at all. Everyone else is covered, more or less, by insurance and so are the Germans, French and Japanese etc. But what a difference in the insurance systems! In the other countries you get insurance just like here EXCEPT THAT 1. you cannot be denied 2. you cannot be cancelled 3. everyone is covered and 4. your premiums are regulated by government which of course is what the entire debate is about. Because here the insurance industry is for profit and the premiums reflect that fact, the amazing fact that US health is the USA's largest industry by far, larger that the State of California, four times larger that the military, in fact US health would be the world's 8th largest country. No wonder the debate is so fierce. This excellent books set it all out readably and comprehensively.

I first read Joel Fuhrman, M.D.'s book "Eat To Live" May 2007 after my father died of heart disease. I have always been a vegetarian but I have always been overweight as well. I had 50 extra pounds to lose and my main goal has always been health over looks. I learned from his book that being a Vegan also means no processed foods or animal products of any kind. I love that book and lost those 50 pounds that I had never been able to lose before age 42.
After a year living the "Eat To Live" plan I read "Eat For Health" twice. The differences are huge. The biggest difference is that Dr. Fuhrman takes us Americans through 4 stages of gradual eating changes by doing some food exercises and stepping down animal products and processed foods. The only foods he asks us to eliminate immediately are all cheese, butter and transfats. I can see why he changed his point-of-view to gradually add vegetables, fruits and beans to our diets because otherwise it can be a shock to our typical way of eating and most people will reject it as they did in his book, "Eat To Live."
I find I need the extreme approach right off the starting line and I have learned to love vegetables and fruits. I feel that his gradual steps to eliminate meat and processed foods and grains was backpedaling from his original book, but on the other hand I fully understand why he did it and that was to reach as many people to change their eating habits as possible and so in this content, it makes perfect sense. Before May 2007 I was a vegan who rarely ate fruits and vegetables thinking cereal and popcorn was healthy, now I thrive on those foods and have kept my weight down to near ideal with no effort at all.
I have always loved reading nutrition books and before Joel Fuhrman, M.D. I thought Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Oz were the best, but now I see that they both focus far too heavily on whole grains, which Dr. Fuhrman says to eat very little of because they are not dense in nutrition. The rule of this plan is to eat foods highest on the nutrient index and avoid foods with little nutritional value all-together.
Here's a list of the foods he says we can eat from his book in unlimited quantities, and these are the only foods I eat myself. This plan is the only book that made perfect sense to me and I knew in my core that this is the only choice I would make for optimal health and wellness.

Dr. Judith Beck Diet Solution
I have been following the Beck Diet solution using the original book. The workbook is a nice addition to the book, but basically is the same information as the original text with the exception of places to write your reflections. I think I'd stick to the original book, and just reflect in a journal. I love the content of The Beck Diet Solution. It approaches weight management from a common sense 'think positive' approach, giving a series of steps to take to gain control of your eating. It's made a big difference for me.

Susan Boyle - She exceeded everyone's expectations and went on to sell almost 4 million copies
Very disappointing unauthorized biography with pieced together clips of Susan Boyle's life assembled from various media sources - very dry narration - with a few interesting clips from UK reporters interviewing her brother, Larry King interviewing Elaine Page and the Britain's Got Talent stars. Slow-paced, but for fans of Susan worth the still photos and the video interviews. I wished I had bought the used version and save a few more dollars.

I started taking Alli about two months ago to augment my diet and exercise program. I'm active, and with a BMI of 26, I just wanted to lose about 20 lbs that wasn't coming off with my fairly intense cardio routine and low-fat diet. I would take Alli as directed with meals containing some fat but rarely more than the suggested amount of fat. And I did experience the treatment effects with meals within the suggested fat allotment: frequent, oily stools, random oily discharge (very gross), and stomach pain about 45 minutes after eating. However, they weren't severe enough to make me stop taking the med. Over time, I didn't lose an ounce but kept taking the pill as directed, hoping that it would kick in over time. It didn't. And then I had a higher fat meal after taking one Alli pill. I know that the`treatment effects' are supposed to act like aversion therapy, but this was ridiculous. I ended up in the ER with crippling, stabbing stomach pain and dry-heaving. I had such a bad reaction that stomach pumping was treatment of choice. Every med has side effects and not everyone can tolerate certain drugs. However, I hope that people will consider the risks and weigh the benefits before spending quite a bit of money on something that may not work.
Overall, I ended up with nasty side effects, a considerable ER bill, and no weight loss. And for those it does work for, you may become dependent on the drug for continued weight loss or even weight maintenance (this is from the actual website)- quite a price to pay to lose 2 to 3 more pounds more than you would have with diet and exercise alone. If Alli works for you, awesome- more power to you. But before you buy, please read the fine print- the pill may cost you a lot more than you bargained for.

I started taking Alli about two months ago to augment my diet and exercise program. I'm active, and with a BMI of 26, I just wanted to lose about 20 lbs that wasn't coming off with my fairly intense cardio routine and low-fat diet. I would take Alli as directed with meals containing some fat but rarely more than the suggested amount of fat. And I did experience the treatment effects with meals within the suggested fat allotment: frequent, oily stools, random oily discharge (very gross), and stomach pain about 45 minutes after eating. However, they weren't severe enough to make me stop taking the med. Over time, I didn't lose an ounce but kept taking the pill as directed, hoping that it would kick in over time. It didn't. And then I had a higher fat meal after taking one Alli pill. I know that the`treatment effects' are supposed to act like aversion therapy, but this was ridiculous. I ended up in the ER with crippling, stabbing stomach pain and dry-heaving. I had such a bad reaction that stomach pumping was treatment of choice. Nikon Coolpix L110 12.1MP Digital Camera with 15x Optical Vibration Reduction (VR) Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black)
This is an awesome little point and shoot camera.
I purchased it because I needed something that would take really nice photos but could be easily slipped into my handbag whilst on vacation. My DSLR and lenses are a little bulky to be lugging around all day.
My first choice after reading tons of reviews was the Canon SX20, mainly because I really didn't want to sacrifice a viewfinder, plus it had the HD video capability. But I have to get a hands on the product first and no stores in our area had one in stock.
When I found the L110 was just being released I decided to give it a go....I have to admit I am impressed....this is a neat little camera. I've read some reviews where people are dissapointed that there aren't any manual settings, but the many preset features are really good for just about all conditions.
One feature that I really like is the smart portrait setting - the camera will automatically shoot the pic when it detects a smile. This feature helped me get some of the cutest photos of our baby nephew. When I was trying on plain auto mode I missed the smile every time. Theres also a setting that will let you know if someone blinked with a pop up on screen warning. This certainly helps avoid those *would've been a great pic if only you hadn't blinked* photos that you notice hours after the event.
As for digital zoom...I don't really like it on any camera...so chances are I won't use it unless absolutely necessary. But, I did try it out and found that using the full zoom capabilities you can get a pretty impressive photo of the moon, craters and all :o) (I'll post a photo I took of the moon with the L110) I did need to use a tripod though, because at that power zoom the camera shake was pretty bad. But it could be just me, I don't have the steadiest of hands.
I also love that I can record HD video, even indoors in low light it's not really that bad when played on a HD TV. Outdoors in natural light it is pretty impressive. However, its not intended to replace a stand alone video camera so don't expect Hollywood results. Oh and the mic isn't ideally placed, but thats probably to minimize the recording of the lens movement when zooming (it already picks up on it so avoid zooming if possible)

This is a fantastic camera. The macro feature is the reason I got this camera and it's great for taking pictures of my aquarium. The sports mode works great for capturing fish. It's super easy to use.
The only con is that there are many possible settings and most of them are pretty specific. If you get the wrong setting, then pictures will look odd (strange colors or incorrect focus). However, these were very specific situations (like the aquarium) and once I figured out which setting to use, it works great.

Yes, the product I ordered is very inexpensive compared with full-retail prices, but buyer beware! I received the test strips but they were already opened. Seller said a child accidentally opened them while carring them - ?!?!? What? Why? How? That really didn't concern me as much as the test strips were soon to expire!!! I have been a Type 2 diabetic for the past 8 years. I have been through plenty of meters during this time. I started with the LifeScan One Touch meter. That was covered by my insurance carrier. But then I switched jobs and began going to the VA for my treatments. They use Accu-Chek products, so I had to change meters that I was uncomfortable with because it took took 45 seconds to read the results whereas the One Touch was a 5 second readout. When you're feeling hypoglycemic, time spent waiting for the results REALLY matters. I had been trying other meters in between, and then Accu-Chek came out with what I consider their best meter yet, the Aviva. It uses a very small amount of blood to conduct a test, and the lancing device that comes with it is something unlike any other device I have seen, the Multiclix. Lancets are stored in a drum, 6 at a time. You never have to touch another lancet. Never have to worry about accidentally sticking yourself when you're changing or discarding lancets.
This meter is lot more stylish than the Advantage. It is faster, more accurate, uses an infrared device to transmit testing information stored on a computer unlike the Advantage which needed a cable, and you can even customize the front face with a variety of "skins" that fits your personality or lifestyle.
The Aviva meter takes a giant step forward in technology for Roche, but the Multiclix Lancing Device steals the show. Even if you don't use an Accu-Chek meter, you owe it to yourself to switch to this outstanding lancing device. You even get 2 more lancets in the box rather than the standard 100 lancet package (17 drums - 6 lancets in each = 102). It's pain-free testing and you can even test yourself on your thigh if you want. Not too many other lancing devices can make that claim. In fact, there are 6 locations you can test yourself - finger tip, palm, forearm, upper arm, thigh, and calf.
All in all, I am very happy Roche developed the Aviva and the Multiclix Lancing Device. The VA has made the switch to this much better meter (though they still give you the Softclix Lancing Device with their packaging). If you're a veteran reading this, throw away your Advantage and go to the Pharmacy to get the new Aviva.

7" Google Android 2.1 Tablet Pc Wifi Ebook Reader 3d Game Epad Apad
If you are looking for and A-Pad that will compete with the I-Pad, this is not the item. It has a slow processor and not very much ram. But if you want it as a Kindle, and epub reader that can run most applications well from the android network, it will work fine. The touch screen is a little slow as well, if you are familiar with iphones or most android phones, you'll note that scrolling is effortless and quick, on this A-pad, you have to put a little extra pressure to make it work, be very deliberate and slow, if you make the motion quickly you are likely to open a program.

ANHUB 7" Inch Touchscreen Android Tablet PC PAD MID WiFi…
The ANHUB aPAD Tablet PC is really a curious product. You get some very good stuff (like the excellent 7-inch display, good performance, big battery, powerful software, a lot of cool apps downloadable from Android Market, etc.) in a very inexpensive Mobile Internet Device (MID) that may well be one of the early trailblazers in an emerging Android tablet market. This little tablet does an awful lot, and it does it better than any of the old Pocket PCs ever did including Web surfering, Goolge Search, Google MAP, Gmaes, Youtube, IH/SKYPE/MSN, eBOOK, ... a lot lot of more apps.
A bit problem is, it's running a potentially very important OS on a Tablet at a time where that OS is still mostly implemented only on phones, it's doing so with apparently a cold attitude from Google, and the inexpensive hardware, while not inelegant, cannot possibly be as polished as what comes out of Apple.
Nevertheless, it is an innovative Android based MID or Talbet PC, and it definately worths the money for its pricing comparing with Apple iPAD, Samsung Samsung Galaxy PAD...
